They ripped off some shit, but they did not rip off Stairway. At least not from Spirit.

Descending baselines are common, but Stairway had a descending baseline and an ascending melody line tied into one. Apparently, Jimmy Page was trying to sound like J.S. Bach.

Not imo. Plus zepplin made it famous, spirit didn’t. Anyway it’s just an intro, I want someone to steal the intro to guns n roses welcome to the jungle and make a song out of that. There’s another def leppard song that I can’t think of that’s like that too.

I say no. It's kind of similar, but really how many chords are there? You're bound to overlap something else.

I’d give this case more credence if it were filed earlier than 4 plus decades since the song became internationally known. If I were on the jury I’d throw that crap out even if it were a 100% copy of the whole damned song. That ship should have sailed long ago and this kind of junk is a waste of everyone's time.

Yes. They ripped a good amount of stuff off, which many musicians do, intentionally or coincidentally. The problem is they never liked to give credit, or ca$h, in those cases. When the Rolling Stones or whoever else play a tune that sounds just like Muddy Waters, they say “Hey, we learned this all from Muddy Waters.” Zeppelin had many similarities to many old blues artists and some of their contemporaries, but never admitted it.

FYI, I love their music, just not some other stuff about them.

Its amazing how you can hear it in every other song if you try. Hotel California? I would have said no way, but when your brain is trying to hear it, there it is. The fault is in our brains. We try to associate and assimilate visual and auditory patterns into the existing framework of what we’ve learned before. It’s why medley’s work on a basic level but our thinking mind tells us they are shit. What tells me that “Stairway” is not a ripoff is my hairs standing on end when I hear it. As you said, if they ripped off anyone, it was Bach.

To quote Shad on the radio yesterday, “Trying to claim ownership over a basic progression is like trying to claim ownership over the number 4, because you counted to it first”

At 40 seconds into this interview, Jimmy says he was trying to sound like a poor man’s Bach.

I don’t think this is necessarily how it works in our legal system, but I would say that to steal music, you need to steal the emphasis and tonality of a song as well as the notes. And that’s clearly not the case with Stairway compared to Spirit - Stairway’s descent ends in that classic “bom, bom bom.” You probably can hear it even though I didn’t type notes or rhythm, because it’s the important conclusion to that line. And ignoring that, the composition, groove, and sound of Stairway is so vastly different that to call it a theft would be to ignore all the best parts of that song. You could argue that the Spirit lick could have influenced Page’s playing, or that it was an inspiration, but that song doesn’t hold a candle to Stairway.
